Homemade Pop Tarts

Before we start the tutorial, let's take a look at the ingredients in a store bought pop tart:
Filling made with 10% fruit? What is the other 90%?! The rest of the small print consists mainly of mysterious words that I would have to look up in a dictionary and then have a scientist explain to me.
Ingredients:
  • Pie crust (store bought or homemade)
  • Powdered sugar
  • Sprinkles
  • Jam that you'd like your poptarts to be flavoured with (I used strawberry)
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°
Step 2: Lay out your pie crust and cut it into the shape of your poptart; make sure you have a top and bottom for each poptart (ex. if you make it a square, have 2 squares to close the poptart).  You may have to re-roll some of the crust to get use out of all of it.
*Fun Hint: cookie cutters make more fun shapes and to ensure equal sized top/bottom pieces
Step 3: Put some jam in the middle of the bottom piece (estimate the amount by the size of your pop tart).  Put a little more than you'd like because it may seep out while baking.

Ideas for alternative fillings:
  • Chocolate
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutella
  • Grape Jam
  • Peach Jam
  • Apple Jam
  • Peanut Butter

Step 4: Place the matching piece or crust on top and squeeze the edges together to close it.  Place your pop tarts on parchment paper (keeps the jam from getting on the pan) and then on a cookie sheet.  Now pop these babies into the oven.

Step 5: Bake for ~15 minutes or until golden brown
**Don't be alarmed if you look in your oven and see your jam dripping out**
Step 6: Mix some powdered sugar with milk to create an icing.  You need a VERY small amount of milk so add it slowly and stir until you have a good consistency.
Step 7: Once your pop tarts come out of the oven, pour some icing on and immediately sprinkle the sprinkles on.  If you wait, the sprinkles won't stick to the icing.
Step 8: Once they have cooled, place them on a plate and serve with a large glass of cold milk :)
